On the Charge!

It had all started so well for the Chiefs, interception on the Chargers first possession and the an opening TD on Pat Mahomes pass to Demarcus Robinson. In fact right up until the 4th quarter it was all going largely according to script for Kansas City up 28-14. Mahomes was having his now usual good day at the office and the supporting cast (particularly Damien Williams and Travis Kelce) were doing their bit. However, LA had crucially manages to keep Tyreek Hill quiet and slowly but surely the Chargers started to take the air out of the Kansas City offense.
Philip Rivers shook off his 1st half interceptions to rally the Chargers offense 2nd half – particularly impressive was the 11 play drive early in the 4th which came straight after KC 13 play drive make it 28-14. By now Rivers was in full on gunslinger mode (only 1 run in 11 plays). The defense then got the stop they needed with an Issac Rochell & Melvin Ingram sack before another 8 play all-pass drive ending with the TD Mike Williams. Finally, the Chargers have the moxie to call the 2pt conversion and walk away from a stunned Arrowhead Stadium with a crucial win.
So, what does this mean for both sides and the AFC playoff picture? For the Chiefs the worries over the secondary continue – a lot of big chunk plays given up 2nd half and they rely (defensively) on the pressure they can get to the QB – Justin Houston and Chris Jones were immense. For the Chargers it is naturally a huge boost to get the comeback win but they were kept at arms length in this one for so long. They have some great individual pieces on the board (Rivers, Bosa, Ingram, Mike Williams starting to prove his 2017 draft position) but are they good enough all round to bring it altogether for 4 quarters in the playoffs?
Both sides have it tough next week Chiefs @ Seahawks, Chargers home to the Ravens and very winnable divisional games in week 17 – Chiefs home to Raiders, Chargers @ Broncos.
Whichever way the division pans out i can see these two contesting the AFC Championship come January and, on the basis of this game, that would be a hard one to call.
